Uday Kumar Mondal

Uday Kumar Mondal never 'ends' a painting. His working process is continuous and on-going, the previous work extends into the current canvas. Although he doesn't consider himself as an abstract painter, he gives his images abstract qualities. The simulacrum is non-abstract and ambiguous, derived from photographs in fashion magazines. The juxtapositioning of geometric layouts and various photographic tonal qualities with different levels of design and form, fascinates Mondal. He replaces the design elements with painterly marks, making the image neither abstract or realistic.
