| Jogen Chowdhury :
his life and
times
Jogen Chowdhury’s art has
an iconic quality. His expression is universal yet strangely reminiscent
of a Bengali spirit. Having been educated in both Kolkata and Paris, his
art straddles effortlessly between the east and the west. Yet, Jogen remains
resolutely individualistic. While imbibing the spirit of western modernism,
he emerges with an application which is deeply rooted in his indigenous
sensibilities. In course of over four decades of sustained contribution,
Jogen emerges as one of the foremost artists of Post independent India.
A dedicated teacher with a deep social commitment, Jogen’s art has
inspired successive generations of Indian artists of the 1980s and 1990s.
This book captures some of Jogen’s recent ideas, concerns and predilections.
After several months of conscientious research, Rita Dutta provides a
rare glimpse of his current vision. Her interview is incisive, sensitive
and reflects the man, Jogen and his times.
Jogen Chowdhury : His Life and Times emerges as an indispensable
book of reference for all researchers and scholars working on contemporary
Indian art.
This book contains over sixty coloured illustrations.

| An Enchanted Space :
the private
world of Ganesh Pyne
Pyne has always painted dream
worlds, a world that "is only half articulate and leaves the rest
to a strange eloquent silence." Using images from his childhood,
religious iconography and the stories of the Bengali epics, he has created
an oeuvre that is deeply private, resonant with myth and full of complexity.
An Enchanted Space : The Private World of Ganesh Pyne is being
published on the occasion of one of the major solos of this seminal artist.
The last book Ganesh Pyne – His Life & Times was published in
1998. It traced his early work – the maturing in the fifties and
sixties, the anguished response to the Naxalite movement of the seventies.
On the other hand The Enchanted Space focuses on his current work which
possesses a new note of sombreness. It reaffirms Pyne’s position
as one of the most profound and original artists in India today.
This book contains over fifty coloured illustrations.
