Ganesh Haloi

Ganesh Haloi, a painter in the non objective style, of Calcutta, received his art education from the Government College of Art and Crafts, Calcutta. On graduation, Haloi was appointed as a Senior Painter at the Archaeological Survey, Government of India, Ajanta Caves. Later, he joined the Government College of Art & Crafts as Art Professor till his retirement in 1993. Though a non-objective painter, Haloi claims to be a landscape artist, the source of his inspiration being the rural landscapes of Bengal and Orissa. Painting on flat, two-dimensional surface in the tradition of Indian miniature painting, his abstract landscapes evoke in the viewer a vision of a bird’s eye-view. While in his earlier paintings in the gouache medium, elements of nature are recognizable, in his recent works – both in gouache and oil medium, one notices a further simplification, resulting in works which are totally abstract in form and content.
