Satyaranjan Das

Satyaranjan Das (b.1993) is an artist hailing from the quaint village of Brahmansuanlo in the Khordha district of Odisha. His artistic journey began when he completed his BFA in Painting from B.K. College of Art, Bhubaneswar, Odisha in 2014, which was further strengthened by his MFA in Painting from the College of Art, University of Delhi, in 2020.

Satyaranjan’s artistic approach is driven by his passion for watercolor, which he uses as a medium to convey the dialogues of his works. However, he is equally influenced by other mediums such as mixed media, video making, installations, palm leaf, acrylics, graph paper, maps, Chinese paper, graphite, and pen. His inspiration came from the traditional art forms of his homeland, Odisha, specifically Odisha’s intricate pata paintings and palm leaf paintings.

In his art, Satyaranjan strives to establish a balance between his rustic upbringing and the cosmopolitan metropolis where he now resides. He aspires to create a new artistic language that accurately reflects life and time. His recent works are a reflection of his concerns about the political and social frontiers that disrupt the harmony of land, people, houses, and nature. The ongoing repercussions of the Indian Constitution’s Article 19, which allows people to move and settle in any part of India, inspired Satyaranjan to create works that explore the people’s expressions, activities, and behavior after displacement. He uses his artistic prowess to remind us that the beauty of life lies in its diversity, and we must celebrate it.
